Live in Levi’s®: Office Style (Sponsored)

It’s weird working in an office almost every day after two years worth of coffee shops and working at home. Doing the job? No problem. Dressing for it? A whole ‘nother story! I don’t know why, but getting dressed for work was the most nerve-wracking part of taking on this contract. In Seattle, we don’t ever have to worry about being too dressed down for most offices. However, I’m not the type to throw on just any old tee and jeans and call it good. Just like any other situation, dressing for the office means finding the right fits for my body, my personality and my need to be comfortable in my own skin.

Levi’s® Pull-On Leggings in dark ink rinse

Levi’s® have been a staple in my wardrobe for as long as I can remember. Nowadays, most of my Levi’s® are vintage pairs I’ve scoured from various thrift shops and garage sales and transformed into cutoffs. Vintage Levi’s® have a natural high-waisted look, and are so comfortable yet sturdy. There are a lot of different kinds of denim out there nowadays, but I always know there’s solid fabric, quality and craftsmanship in each pair of my Levi’s®. I treasure my vintage cutoffs, but what style of Levi’s® should I wear into the office?

I was super stoked to review Levi’s® new Pull-On Leggings in dark ink rinse. Figure-enhancing and perfectly slimming, these modern-day Levi’s® are an essential pant for the office wardrobe. The legging style means they’re extremely soft, stretchy and comfortable – yet they’ve still got that denim look that’s easy to pair with everything from crisp white button-downs, chambray shirts, silk tunics and your favorite cotton tanks.

FJ Summer ’14: What I’m obsessed with for summer!

Short hair & light tones

– Last year I rocked bold ombré locks (really long locks) and although I enjoyed the black, reddish-brown and blond tones in my hair, I have recently graduated so I thought I needed a change. I decided to opt for a shoulder-length cut and as for the color; I went for a balyage/ombré technique with honey brownish-blonde tones. Now that summer is approaching and the heat is creeping upon us I’m loving the liberty of having short hair!

Color me pink…and purple…and red

– It’s almost summertime so get ready for the vivid hues for your lips. One of my faves and staples is my “Rouge Shine” from Sephora because if you apply a light coat it creates a faint magenta color for day, however; if you’re going for more of a pop of color at night, you can apply a few more layers and your lips will be a gleaming violet. When I want a vibrant hot pink lip I go for my “Rouge Artist Intense” lipstick by Make Up For Ever. I also recently picked up two lipsticks from the “Kate” line of Rimmel London – a classic red and mauve (inspired by Kylie Jenner).

Bralettes are the new push-up

– Totally obsessed with the lightweight, lacey undergarment. Not only are they comfortable, but also they’re so cute slash sexy and may be worn to be seen too – for example, under a loose or sheer top.

Crazy but fun florals

– Be daring and don’t be afraid to wear lots of bright colors in the summer; it’s the time to shine anyways! I recently found a peplum top with a colorful bird-of-paradise floral design and I also have a crop top with a vibrant tropical flower print. I love that both tops have mesh inlays, which could allow the breeze to flow through– awesome for this sizzling season!

Be bold, with colors

– CHARTREUSE. It’s my favorite color for summer. I own an H&M skirt and an Urban Outfitters top (decorated with French lace) both in this color. I love how bold this color is and paired with subtle colors, it just stands out and can pull an outfit together.

Pretty in powder blue

– One of the trendy colors of the season is powder blue! This pastel color, reminiscent of summer skies, is a soft hue that’s looks very crisp paired with white or black. I recently purchased a crop button-down top in powder blue, with white polka dots.

Xx,

Courtney

Summer Style Refresh w/Bottled Starbucks® Iced Coffee (Sponsored)

Summer's right around the corner! We've been getting teases of sunshine and 80-degree weather already, and I can't wait until my day-to-day wardrobe consists mostly of shorts, tanks, light layers and flowy fabrics. This year, I've made a resolution of sorts to really cut down on clutter - including what's in my closet. While I'll mix new staples and finds in for the current and upcoming season, I try to do regular closet cleanses and donate or Poshmark things I don't need. With warmer weather approaching, it's time for another wardrobe refresh. Here are some of my favorite tips on how to edit, add and remix your closet:

Keep it real

I'm a big fan of the rule, "If you haven't worn it in over a year, it's got to go." If you're holding onto something with the hopes of one day fitting it again (but you haven't in years), let it go like Frozen. I picked up a great tip a few years ago to flip a hanger around if you wear the piece of clothing that goes on it. After six months, those whose hangers haven't been flipped are up for review (to keep or toss.) I still have a hard time parting with pieces that bring nostalgia and nothing else; keeping it real with myself has made it a lot easier to begrudgingly break up with the tangibles of old memories.

Play dress up

Probably the best part of closet cleansing is trying on all the stuff you want to keep! I always have a lot of fun creating new outfit combinations or trying out new trends by mixing together what I've already got in my closet. Sometimes the things you haven't worn in awhile have to go, and other times they just need a good dress-up session to bring it back into your current rotation.

Dolce Vita jumpsuit /  Zara strappy stilettos / earrings from Moksha / denim jacket from Urban Outfitters (old)

Incorporate statement pieces wisely

A lot of my wardrobe is neutral so I can layer up, but I'll take liberties in statement pieces to create different looks. I love vintage, estate sale and sample sale shopping for standout outerwear, and for summer I love bringing in lightweight fabrics in prints and patterns. I love a good romper and jumpsuit when I can find them!

Take care of your basics

If you're anything like me, you live in tanks, tees and other glorious cotton comforts that go with everything. Over time, I've learned that it can be worth it to indulge a bit in a higher-quality tank or tee that will last for ages. I also can't resist a good deal, so I'll also buy more affordable basics in multiple colors, then restock on ones I've worn holes or tears into.

Accessorize!

When you don't want to spend too much updating your wardrobe for the season, the quickest way to refresh is in accessories! Winter's all about scarves, while summer is solely for stocking up on sunnies. Accessories are also a great way to explore trends for the season; I snagged a bunch of trendy cat eye and mirrored sunglasses in a recent sale.

Happy summer style refresh y'all! Special shoutout to Bottled Starbucks® Iced Coffee for fueling my recent closet cleanses and subsequent shopping sessions.

Fresh Style: Seahawks Super Bowl XLVIII Edition

Whatever happens today, this NFL season has been especially magical in the city of Seattle and all Seahawks fans. A week ago, Sarah Lovrien and I decided to collaborate on a Super Bowl weekend style shoot. One football field, four outfits and less than 24 hours later, here's our final product. For me, this shoot was just one more way to show my civic Seahawks pride in a style that's all my own. You saw my everyday looks on Evening Magazine, and this is my take on more fashion-y ensembles to take far beyond the tailgate. Sarah captured a few different aspects of my life in this one - the glam, the Jem (truly outrageous), a little boho (aka thrown together like "Let's see if this works") and the fitness. This shoot is such a testament to Sarah's impeccable photographic eye, distinct aesthetic, attention to detail and texture, and her unyielding work ethic (she had these out to me at 6:00a.m. this morning!)

Thank you to the entire Seahawks organization for bringing this city together in a way we've never seen before. You can literally feel the energy bouncing off the walls and in each passerby's smile. Thank you for allowing us 12s to express our love, gratitude and support of you in our own, individual way.

Fresh Jess' Seahawks Style on Evening Magazine

Last week, Kim Holcomb of Evening Magazine asked me to style some of my Seahawks pieces in a segment that aired last night. It was the perfect intersection of some of my favorite things - the Seahawks, hometown pride and personal style. I've grown up watching KING 5 and Evening Magazine, and to actually be on it was surreal! I had a lot of fun showing my 12th Man pride in the days before the big game. Being a Seattle native, there's never been a time when the city has felt so connected, swelling with support for our team. We know we have an extremely special squad this season, and it's been absolutely magical - and yet strangely natural - to see them get to this point. Football in February is the sweetest Valentine yet!

"I'm just 'bout dat action, boss" :P

Thanks Kim & Evening Magazine for having me!

Fresh Style: Thankfulness & Wool Sweatpants

Happy Thanksgiving everyone! Every day I'm thankful for your support and readership, as well as for the love and light from my family and nearest + dearest friends. Deuce, the lost bulldog in Seattle and the survivors of typhoon Haiyan are still on my mind every waking moment as well. I wish a safe homecoming for Deuce, and peace for those in the affected typhoon areas. My heart is with you on this Thanksgiving day.

Had a fun conversation on Twitter yesterday when I tweeted "Trying to decide which fancy sweatpants to wear tomorrow." Thanks to current fashion trends and my undying love for Nike and other sportswear, I found I'd actually procured a few pairs of fancy sweatpants this year of the leather, harem, ruched, bamboo fabric and other variety. I met the beautiful L.A.-based designer Piper Gore through a mutual friend, and Piper was kind enough to gift me with one of her favorite winter essentials - the wool Too Cool sweatpants from her A/W '13 collection.

These beauties are basket-weave wool with leather trim and satin lining. The cream and tan juxtapose well with all of the olive and brown tones that take up a good part of my closet. This Zara sweater is in regular rotation, while the Nike SB beanie is my latest procurement for my never-ending beanie collection. It's cold, alright?!

Nike Sky Hi Dunk Premium

The Nike Sky-Hi Dunk Premium is the crown jewel of my sneaker collection at the moment. A trip to Portland for some shopping at the Nike employee store coincided with the release of Nike's holiday guide, Give the Gift of Sport. After writing about these then spotting them in the flesh, I knew they had to be mine. Waterproof toebox upper with olive suede and orange socks? Have a seat, regular Dunk wedges!

Thanksgiving Style with Jaleh Clothing

Turkey day has finally come y'all. Every year, after I'm done helping out in the kitchen, I sit in my room and stare at my closet like the "perfect" outfit is going to appear. Looking cute on Thanksgiving has never been a priority of mine, but this year I figured maybe I could switch it up and grub in style.

One of my favorite local womenswear lines, Jaleh Clothing, let me pull some gorgeous pieces from their collection to make a few different Thanksgiving Day outfits. One of my Aces, (see what I did there Jess!) Rosie and I brainstormed a few outfits we thought were perfect to wear to dinner tonight. Before you decide on sweatpants, an old shirt, and throwing your hair in a bun, consider these ideas:

1. Comfy Comfy Comfy: For the girl who just wants to eat whatever she wants and not feel constricted by the pants she wears.

Bonus: the jacket hides the belly!

(Pictured: Lily Crossover JacketElla Leggings, Nordstrom BP T-Shirt, Steve Madden Boots)

2. Casual: For the girl who wants to look extra good while eating good.

Observation: Scarves prevent stains or catch crumbs...hey, snack for later!

(Pictured: Della Bows TopElla Leggings, Nordstrom Rack Scarf, Rag & Bone Booties)

3. Dressy: The name says it all. This outfit is for the girl who takes dinner outfits seriously, wants to work it from beginning till the end and doesn't care how cold it is outside.

Thought: Skirts give the tummy a little breathing room too, so eat up!

(Pictured: Jacki Draped Top, H&M Leather Skirt, F21 Shoes & Necklace, Pitaya Belt)

My personal favorite is the casual outfit, which one would you wear? A huge thanks goes out to to Jaleh and Rosie for helping me out. Have a Happy Thanksgiving!

**If any of the Jaleh pieces caught your eye, they're having a huge Black Friday sale!

Fresh Style: Old West/Coast w/ Ariat's Saratoga Boot

This is a sponsored post written by me on behalf of Ariat.

I've always wanted a good pair of cowboy boots, but the perfect pair has always eluded me. How to incorporate such an iconic style into my normally urban style? Enter Ariat.

This classic American footwear brand has roots deep in the equestrian culture. Like the sport, Ariat boots and apparel are driven by world-class design, innovation and technology. The brand was kind enough to gift me the Saratoga boot in Old West Black, and to my surprise, these fit seamlessly in my footwear rotation.

Western boots are fun because they’ve got that distinct stitch print and Old West flair that make them a statement unto themselves. I thought about pairing them with a silk sheath dress, romper, or maybe even some cutoff shorts and tights. But hi it’s freezing, and the most natural thing to come out of my closet were layers on layers of my tried & true Pacific Northwest street style. Throw a beanie on top and a hemp milk latte in my hand, and voila! Pretty much my every day outfit before your very eyes.

The Saratoga boot is amazingly comfy and sturdy; an easy choice for all-day wear. I went a half-size up and recommend you do the same! Take a look at all the different boot styles at

Fall Style Guide with Courtney Liu

Seattle has seemed to skip over the crisp air that fall typically brings and jumped straight to the bone-chilling wintery weather—even though it’s still October…

This means one thing: breaking out the down jackets, boots, woven hats and knitted sweaters. In the past, I know I’ve been one to complain about how it’s impossible to look cute while still trying to maintain body warmth but after living in Seattle for nearly three years, I’m here to show you several ways to play it smart in cold yet still be stylish!

Turban Outfitted – Pair a turban with a black leather jacket like for an edgier look this season. The color of the turban model, Katy, is wearing is perfect for fall and was purchased from Urban Outfitters. It serves the same purpose of a beanie – keeping that head warm – but in a uniquely fashionable way.

Turban Outfitted
Turban Outfitted

No more North Face? – People in Seattle are known rock the North Face jackets to beat the rain but let’s be honest, it’s nearly impossible to look cute if you have to cover up your outfit with a black rain jacket. Take a look at stores like Ross or T.J. Maxx for designer jackets at really low prices! The Kenneth Cole rain jacket Katy is wearing, will surely keep you dry and I purchased it at Ross so you know that it didn’t break the bank!

Side note: Since rain jackets aren’t worn for warmth, pair your rain shielder with a knitted printed sweater underneath, to add pizzazz to your look.

Raincoat
Raincoat

Leopard Grunge – When is it really the right time to bring out the animal prints? This season, keep warm in an animal-printed (leopard, zebra or giraffe prints all work) jacket. Be bold and match your favorite animal print – mine is obvi leopard—with a colored jean and combat boots! Try a raspberry or plummy-colored jean since both shades are popular for fall.

Side note: If an animal-printed jacket is a little too much on the “wild” side for your taste, go for an animal-printed accessory such as the leopard beanie, which I’m pictured wearing (it’s from Free People) with a neutral-colored sweater and a chartreuse over-the-shoulder purse for that pop of color.

Faux Fur, Duh! – When you think of fur you probably think bougie, huh? But who says it has to be? I purchased this H&M faux fur vest for $12 at Crossroads…what a deal! You could either pair a faux fur vest with a long sleeved dress or as shown on Katy, with a simple knitted sweater and leggings. You’ll be sure to stay snug in this simple yet trendy get-up.

(Girly) Military Mayhem – There’s two looks if you enjoy the military look. You could go more literal with a camo jacket or you could go for the subtle military look with an olive green jacket and leather accents.

Camo jacket: Pair your camouflage-printed jacket with a ripped jean and a colored hat (see how raspberry color appears again in the beanie!). Since camo is usually a combination of neutral colors, it’s nice to throw a bright color into the ensemble. Side note: It’s cool to mix prints these days! Don’t be afraid to wear your camo jacket over a printed sweater like the one on Katy, which is tie-dyed. Olive green jacket with leather accents: Similarly when wearing this jacket, because the color is very neutral, try adding a colored hat (in this case, Katy is pictured wearing an ox blood-colored beanie). Also to keep with the rough look, wear a pair of black booties with buckles.

Cozy Chic – After a long day at work or school you just want to curl up in bed with a good book but instead of throwing on some sweatpants and a big T-shirt like you may usually do, try putting on a soft, pastel sweater; leggings and bright, fuzzy socks!

Fresh Style: The Perfect White Shirt

Are you looking for a classic white shirt or two to add or refresh your wardrobe?  "Well look no further, ya found 'em!" (Clayton Bigsby voice)

When InStyle reached out to me about their new Perfect White Shirt collection, I was drawn in by the promise of a perfect fit. I have never met a white shirt that fit my petite frame just right. This InStyle Essentials collection uses TrioFit Technology; a patented sizing system that allows us ladies to shop by bra size - not our dress size - for a nearly custom fit. These tops are only $59.99 and available in 30 different sizes - from 32B to 40H! They're also nicely tailored around the waist, paying homage to our natural curvature instead of hiding them underneath your usual crisp white shirt in a boxy style.

I styled the Weekend Tunic with printed trousers and booties for a relaxed look, and paired the adorable Bow Blouse with my favorite leather skirt and leopard heels for a more polished feel. You can go a million ways with these shirts, depending on your personal style and flavor. I'm stoked to have classic shirts that fit me just right. I never imagined I'd be so pleased or hyped to style such a timeless basic!
