Who is FreshJess?



I'm a Seattle young professional, born & raised, and I love the Emerald City! 

I started this blog in 2008 while I was the events director at the Greater Seattle Chamber of Commerce. There, I produced hundreds of events and programs for the Seattle business community, and was exposed to even hundreds more. My blog was created as a means for sharing all of these great events with my friends, colleagues and people who might be interested in them. 

I never wanted to be pigeonholed into covering just events, though. I wanted my blog to be a representation of everything in my life, whether it's my evolving tastes in fashion, music, food, my non-profit work or just things, ideas and people who inspire me.

Hence the name FreshJess. Think of the term 'fresh' as what you'd see if you looked it up in both the regular dictionary and Urban Dictionary. 'Fresh' as in relevant, timely and valuable; 'fresh' as in cool, awesome, inspirational and amazing. Those are the kinds of things I post about. 

I know that might be a bit vague to those of you who don't know me personally/IRL (in real life.) To give you a little more color, here are a few descriptive facts about me:
  1. I love learning. Bill Gates Sr. said it right when he said, "We are all lifelong learners." I have an insatiable thirst for knowledge and most of all, I love to share things that currently grab my attention, whether it's a book, article, movie, song/album or person.
  2. Because of my former job at the Chamber, it's normal for me to go out and network. It's how I got my current job, and how I've opened many doors for myself and for others. I like going to events and meeting new people. You never know who you'll meet or how you'll be able to help each other at one point!
  3. I love to eat.
  4. Bulldogs are my favorite.
  5. I appreciate fashion, but I'm not a fashionista. If anything, it's personal style that I love. I enjoy reading up on the latest in the fashion industry, including trends, news and the current 'Who's Who.' But I feel it's very important that personal style doesn't weigh heavily on the latest trends. I believe in wearing whatever fits you perfectly (physically and mentally.) You should feel like a million bucks in your clothes, and whether or not they actually cost a pretty penny shouldn't matter. Presenting your best at all times should also include a strong sense of self, attention to health and wellness - and a great smile!
  6. I love helping people, and sharing information as much as I can. I have a soft spot in my heart for independent designers, artists and small business owners, especially from Seattle. I am extremely loyal and incredibly supportive.
  7. I am active in social media. It's a space where I live, work and play. Like networking, I got my current job partly due to my work in social, and avenues like Twitter and FreshJess have opened up so many opportunities for me. I feel that social media works its strongest magic in your life when you infuse it within your life, not when you're consumed by it. 
  8. I live to laugh! I hustle hard but I'm a firm believer in not taking yourself too seriously. Make others laugh and be able to laugh at yourself!
  9. I'm a fan of various kinds of music, but as I get older/busier it's becoming really apparent that my heart lies with hip-hop - music and culture. 
  10. Giving back is hugely important to me. Whether it's to your community, to causes that are important to you, or to those that matter to you, giving back is the best way to show love and support. Nobody ever gets anywhere on their own, and I am no different.
